My front garden in Blackburn.Time
Around 3pm one August afternoonLighting
Natural daylight, just a pleasant sunny day. As my front garden is north facing, the sun had just come round to be at it's best for photographs.Equipment
Fuji Finepix S-2800 HD The shot was taken rated at 64 ISO in order to maximise clarity and colour, F4 to give both sharpness as well as a touch of softness and 1/180 (because that's what the camera told me it needed with the other factors!).Inspiration
The rose was planted in honour of my late mother-in-law on the first anniversary of her death, for my wife. This was the first year that it flowered and from the blooms I could see why it was such a favourite of hers - the size and colour are spectacular!Editing
Unless I particularly want to manipulate an image, I try to avoid using an editing suite, using the camera and myself to take the shot. In this case, I simply took the shot with a relaxed view to avoid movement (I have difficulty bending and using macro) and then tightened and cloned the image on-camera, so I don't regard it as being "manipulated".In my camera bag
Since the Fuji is such a versatile camera, all I carry is the camera, tripod and my lunch!Feedback
"The right place at the right time" pretty much sums up this shot. I personally would rather not take a shot and then try and edit it out of trouble (you can almost invariably tell). Better to leave it for another day. In this case I was fortunate to be at home when the weather was perfect and the rose had just hit it's prime - they blight so quickly in bad weather (which came the following day!). Don't be afraid to risk a shot - I've lost count of the number that I've tried and then discarded, but that's the beauty of digital - it's an awful lot cheaper than film, as I'm sure most of my contemporaries will agree!
