Location
This photo was taken in the Austrian Alps. Raven prefer mountains as they usually are shy and keep away from humans, although have co-evolved with them and wolves for thousands of years.Time
This day was particularly dark. Perfect for this shot though, since cameras usually capture ravens as pitch black figures. So, increasing the exposure at noon was effective in getting those feather details.Lighting
I wanted to get a balance between the raven feather details and cloud details. Natural lighting, but a bit of exposure bumping up, created the lighting conditions I needed.Equipment
I used a Canon 6D with a Canon EF 24-105mm L, and no additional equipment.Inspiration
Ravens are a highly social species and they pair for life. This individual had lost its partner recently, and was frequently producing long distance calls in an attempt to get its mate back. It was moving to see its dedication, no doubt coming from the deep pain of social disconnection. With this picture I wanted to immortalize its "call of loneliness".Editing
I decreased the brightness of the sky to get back all the cloud details and I increased the vibrance of the whole photo, as this cloudy lighting was insufficient to bring out the metallic shine in the feathers, as would have been possible in sunlight. In my camera bag
I pack my Canon 6D and EF 24-105mm Lens (pun intended), as this combination gives me the best results in unplanned situations.Feedback
Ravens... require patience. As a corvid behavioural researcher, I realised this quite soon. But, once ravens get used to you, they will amaze you with their personalities and varied social activities. They are worth the wait!
