Wow well done... first glance I thought this was a celebrity portrait (Robert Culp). Your in fine company.

Location
I took this photo in my living room, using my curtains as a backdrop.Time
It was taken in the early evening.Lighting
I deliberately wanted to make the image look strong and harsh. I used a reversed speedlight.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D7000, a 50mm prime lens and an SB-600 speedlight. The camera was mounted on a tripod, and I used a remote shutter release. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I grew a beard for Movember, and wanted to get a strong male image with it before I shaved it off. Events dictated that it was in fact just after Christmas before I had a chance to take the shot, but that simply added to the beard length.Editing
I converted the image to black and white and increased the sharpness and contrast somewhat to achieve the look I wanted. In my camera bag
I always carry my Nikon D7000, with a D90 as a back up body. I also have a 35mm and 50mm prime lens. In addition I have an 18-55mm f/2.8 lens which is a versatile all rounder. Finally my SB-600 speedlight. Depending on the shoot I may also carry an 11-16mm wide angle lens, and a 70-300 telephoto lens.Feedback
Think carefully about how you want your light to fall on the subject. It really is all about the lighting.
