Location
This photo was taken on the southern bank of the River Thames, on the western side of Westminster Bridge.Time
I took the photos (exposure bracketed x 3) in the afternoon with a hazy, overcast sky.Lighting
I wanted to try some HDR photography and the underside of the arches presented a good opportunity to give it a go!Equipment
I took my Canon 550d with a Sigma 30mm prime lens set to F8 to get a decent depth of field. The photos (x3) were taken handheld.Inspiration
I often work in London and noticed this position previously as a potential good spot for a picture of the Palace of Westminster (British Parliament Building). Just prior to this trip to London I had purchased some HDR software and was keen to give it a go.Editing
I used HDR software to get detail in the areas under the bridge arches but maintain the correct exposure above the bridge. I took 3 images, one, 2 stops under exposed, one correctly exposed and one 2 stops over exposed. The HDR software enabled me to merge the photos resulting in a good HDR photo. In my camera bag
I like to take my camera wherever I go so weight and size is important. I used to take the Canon 15-85mm with me but now I have the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 which seems to get more usage now.Feedback
When taking multiple exposures for an HDR shot it is important to keep steady throughout the multiple shots so I would recommend using a tripod where possible. It is very easy to 'over process' HDR images leading to obviously altered / unreal images so keep a light touch is my advice.
