Beautiful, I LOVE this! (I have a thing for lighthouses I think, lol) Great composition and DOF.

I like the photo of grass with the plus of the out of focus area, it is imaginative and adventurous.

Location
I took this photo in one of my favorites places in the world, Beavertail, RI, USA. It was built in 1856 and is located at the mouth of Narragansett Bay.Time
I waited until dusk to take this so that the beam would be on.Lighting
The sun sets to the right. I love how it brightens up that side of the lighthouse.Equipment
I used my Canon Rebel t3i, handheld.Inspiration
The light itself is an inspiration to me but this time I wanted to get a different perspective on it. I thought the reedy grasses were interesting and I wanted to focus on them and not the lighthouse. It was mid-Sept and I felt that keeping the lighthouse out of focus was also a way of showing the fading of summer.Editing
At that time, I was only using picasa. I have never used Photoshop, although started playing with Lightroom5 a year ago. In picasa I would have been very limited and so I would say that there's basically no post-processing on this shot.In my camera bag
I have 3 camera bodies - a Canon Rebels t3i and two t5i so that I don't have to keep changing lenses. Two are usually attached to my Black Rapid strap which I find very useful. I have 4 lenses - 10- 18mm, 17-55mm, 70-300mm, and a macro. I have a MeFOTO tripod in my trunk. I sometimes use polarizing lenses.Feedback
Trial and error is my philosophy.... with lots of error, although that's okay. The DOF in this shot is something that I know many photographers would easily think of. For me, it really took "thinking out of the box" to come up with this shot and do the opposite of what was expected. Don't be afraid to try something different. You can always delete! :-)
