Location
I took this shot at the Butterfly Zoo near Newport, Rhode Island. It's a wonderful place that houses tropical butterflies during the summer.Time
I took this in the middle of the afternoon on a summer day. It was sunny and that made it difficult to capture the butterflies as they are more active when it's sunny.Lighting
Although it was bright outside, the light was somewhat diminished by the screened-in room.Equipment
This is a hand held shot, taken with my Canon Rebel t3i with a macro lens that I used for the first time that day. I was excited about my new lens!Inspiration
I very much enjoy taking photos of butterflies to begin with. I generally like a lot of color in my photos. This zoo has unique butterflies from around the world and it's very interesting to see the many different varieties. Because they move, I find it fun to try to capture their beauty through the lens. Taking pictures of butterflies often produces some good bokeh backgrounds too, which I find pleasing.Editing
I magnified this and also darkened the contrast to make it stand out bold against a black background. The magnification shows exquisite details that we wouldn't see with the naked eye. I am fascinated by the texture of their bodies and wings. I use picasa which is a very simple editing program, so other than the magnification and heightening of the contrast, not much more was done to this photo. In my camera bag
I carry 2 Canon Rebel bodies so that I don't have to switch lenses as often. I use one t3i and one t5i. I have 3 lenses: 17-55mm, a Canon ER 70-300mm zoom, and my macro EF 100mm 1:2.8.Feedback
My best advice is to have fun when doing any shoot but particularly for a butterfly shoot. They will sometimes pose for you but being patient is key to a good butterfly capture. Try to capture them with wings open or looking directly into your camera. You will end up with completely different type photos even thought they were all taken at the same place. When using my macro, I try to aim for the eye or body and I don't mind that the wing might start to go out of focus as long as the eye/body is sharp.
