Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a portraits class I took at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. The instructor was Gregory Heisler. Location was Eaves Movie Ranch. This was a partly posed picture. I asked the model/cowboy to work tack with his hands and made several photos of the result.

Time

This picture was in the shade of the railroad station about 3pm.

Lighting

Shade, low even bounce light from the sun off other old buildings.

Equipment

24-70mm lens on a Sony FF camera. No flash, no tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to see if I could make an evocative portrait without showing eyes or even the face. This wasn't our assignment, I just wanted to stretch what I was doing.

Editing

Apple Aperture and Nik Silver Effect Pro. Great combination for black and white photos.

In my camera bag

I generally carry as little weight as I can! I plan my pictures ahead of time then carry just the equipment needed. Typically a full frame camera and a 24-70mm lens plus spare memory cards, spare batteries and emergency rain covers.

Feedback

What is the soul of a person? Normally in doing a portrait you want to include at least one eye in focus. In this case I wanted to show the soul of a cowboy (and he is a real cowboy as well as model) and I felt that the working hands with some of the working tools (tack, pistol) could be used in place of eyes.
