Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in my studio, which is located in Chicago.

Time

This photo was taken at midday, although the time of is irrelevant as this was shot with studio lighting.

Lighting

I primarily use Elinchrom and Profoto lighting in my studio. This photo was taken using a single Elinchrom BRX500 with a large softbox as the modifier, which was set to camera left to capture both the tattoo and the model's eye.

Equipment

I shot this photograph with a Canon 40D modified to shoot B&W Infrared. In addition to the camera this was shot with a 70-200 Canon 2.8 lens, an Elinchrom BRX500 with large softbox and a SkyPort remote transmitter.

Inspiration

I had been photographing a series of tattoos for an exhibition on body modifications and I had a gracious model willing to work with me to create this image. Her tattoo was black and I thought the infrared would be the perfect camera to create a stylized black and white portrait with the best contrast to show off the tattoo on her skin. The pose came organically during the shoot and was the best choice to create a flowing ling which leads the viewer from the model's eye to her tattoo.

Editing

The only post-processing were contrast adjustments and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I guess this would depend on which bag I happen to be carrying at the time. I have a number of camera bags and a standard backpack which I use regularly. When I'm riding my bike I will use my Tenba sling bag, and in it I will usually carry one of my Canon bodies; either the 6D, 5D MkIII or 7D MkII. This will all depend on what I'm shooting. I will typically have the Canon 24 - 105 attached, and if I need a second lens I will pack it along in the top pocket. On commutes where I am not riding my bike I will use my Tenba Messenger bag, which allows me to carry one or two bodies, which would be one of the bodies listed above and/or the 40D IR body. I will also carry one or two lenses or a Godox speedlight. If I'm riding a bike and want to have a camera on me, I will pack my Sony r7II with a 24mm manual lens. My Tenba roller case allows me to carry a lot of equipment. As you can see I have a bag for every occassion.

Feedback

I would recommend learning lighting first and how to properly light a subject, and then understand the nuances of all your photo equipment. For example, shooting in infrared is not as straightforward as shooting with a standard dSLR, so taking the time to learn which camera settings to use and how it captures light will assist in knowing when to use it and when to shoot in color. As with any other piece of equipment, practice, practice practice.
