Location
This series of photos was taken in my studio, which is located in Chicago, Illinois.Time
Since this photo was taken in my studio, and lit with artificial lighting I have the flexibility to shoot whenever I am inspired to.Lighting
I use Elinchrom strobes in my studio, and for this particular photo I used two lights, one as the main light with a 27" round softbox, and one for the background, which was placed about waist high and pointed up behind my head.Equipment
I shot this with a modified Canon 40D with a 70-200mm lens. Due to the fact that it is a self-portrait, I set the camera up on a tripod, and used PocketWizard wireless triggers to fire the camera, and Elinchrom lights from my seated position.Inspiration
For the past 6 or 7 years I have submitted an image into an International Self-Portait Exhibiton. For some of my previous works I have experimented with materials on the human form, so for this particular submission I chose to incorporate them into the image to create an appearance of elasticity of the skin, which allowed me to seemingly join two heads together.Editing
I created the composite of this image in Photoshop using various photos from the shoot. I had used a minimum of four photos of myself, plus additional ones for the textures. The photos are taken in black & white, so I do not have a need to remove color from the photos. If anything when I shoot this way, I add color into the photo, as done with the eyes. I planned this shoot ahead of time, so I knew how I wanted the materials to move, which made the compositing of all of the elements easy. I believe in working smart, not hard.In my camera bag
This would depend on the bag that I have on my shoot, and the shoot itself. For my portrait work I favor the 70-200 lens, but also have two 85mm primes, 185mm macro, 24-105mm, and a 16-35mm at my disposal. I have an awesome Minolta light meter, various filters, lens cleaning cloths, extra batteries, Canon Speedlight, Elinchrom and Pocket Wizard wireless triggers. I also have 2-Canon 40D [back-up], and a Canon 6D.Feedback
If you are a photographer, shoot your own photos, and don't use stock imagers. This allows you to better plan your shoots, and work more efficiently. You should also the learn to use your equipment, regardless of the type of equipment it is, and keep shooting. If you want to learn your equipment, you must practice using it.
