I took this photo at the Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Illinois. I am a self-taught photographer and this was taken early in my photography adventure. I spent hours at the zoo that day and the lion slept most of the day. I kept returning to it's enclosure and finally the lion woke up, stretched and roared. I was so excited to capture this photo. It was definitely a "right place at the right time" moment.Time
This is one of my favorite photos. It was taken at 4:27 pm on 9/20/2005. I went to the zoo early in the day with my equipment including my tripod. I was nearly ready to give up on the sleeping lion and go home when the lion finally woke up and roared.Lighting
I was happy that the lighting was great because it was overcast but with bright light. I did not have to contend with harsh shadows.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon D100 with my 80-400mm Nikon lens and was on a tripod. IInspiration
I love lions and was determined to capture this old lion awake so I kept returning to the enclosure and patiently waited until he woke up and roared. I was just about to pack up and leave when the moment happened.Editing
I cropped the image and sharpened it a bit in Lightroom. Originally a color photo, after I joined Viewbug in 2014, I uploaded the color photo to my gallery in January of 2014 and decided to convert it to Black and White and uploaded it to Viewbug in August of 2014. I love both the color and the B&W versions of this photo. In my camera bag
At the time of taking this photo, I had only one camera which was a Nikon D100. I carried my 80-400mm and 70-200mm Nikon lenses to the zoo along with extra cards and an extra battery. I also had my remote shutter release. If I am going to other places including parks, I also carry my Nikon 12-24mm, as well as my Nikon 2.8 105mm lens.Feedback
The main advice I would give to others especially at a zoo is to try to go on a less crowded day and time if possible. Patience and persistence are essential because if you just stay at an exhibit for only a few minutes, you may miss the best shots. I also try to not go on a bright sunny day just to avoid harsh shadows. The zoo is actually a great place to practice improving photography skills because there is such a variety of animals and birds to shoot.
