Behind The Lens

Location

I was shooting a wedding and the bride was getting ready at a hotel in Devens, MA, I took the dress, shoes and jewelry into this catwalk that connected the hotel to the banquet hall.

Time

I love a good ring shot. To me, Susan Stripling is the queen of ring shots. I had just watched her workshop on wedding photography a few weeks before and took some of her tips into consideration while shooting this. It was a sunny afternoon and there were lots of windows in the catwalk, which made for some great indirect light.

Lighting

The sun was on the other side of the building, so I had some great indirect sunlight. I didn't want to blow out the details. This was all natural light. My favorite part of this shot is the reflection in the marble.

Equipment

I shot this on my Nikon D4 with the Nikon 105 macro. No flash. All natural lighting. This shot was handheld, although if you don't have enough light, doing macro shots can be kind of tricky. You really need a small aperture in order to capture all of the details of the ring without having them end up out of focus, which can really mean pushing your ISO and/or your shutter.

Inspiration

I had been watching Susan Stripling's CreativeLive workshop on wedding photography. I just love her ring shots. I wanted to use some of her techniques and loved the way the rings reflects in the marble. This is one of my favorite ring shots that I've taken so far.

Editing

I did some minor sharpening and converted the photo to black and white in Photoshop. I used Nicole Lopez Photography's contrasty black and white action, which I just love.

In my camera bag

If I'm shooting a wedding, I usually have my Nikon D4, my D2x as a backup, my Sigma 70-200 2.8, Nikon 24-70 2.8, Nikon 50 1.8, And my Nikon 10-24 3.5, along with my speed lights and Phottix triggers. I also keep plenty of memory cards and spare batteries.

Feedback

I'm still trying to improve my ring shots, but in my experience so far, a good ring shot requires plenty of light on the rings and the key is to use a smaller aperture, probably around f/9 or higher. The macro has such a shallow depth of field that trying to shoot a ring and keep everything in focus, especially if it has a big stone, is going to be next to impossible with a larger aperture. For this, a good reflective surface also helped add some interest to the photo.
