I took this photo in Times Square in NYC after a long day of walking around the city for the first time with a friend.Time
I love this photo a lot. It's one of my favorites from my first trip to NYC. My friend and I decided to make a final stop at Times Square around 11 pm. I was amazed at how many people were still around at that time of night.Lighting
Nothing special with the lighting on this photo. I just used the ambient light from all of the signs, which there are many of in Times Square.Equipment
I shot this on my Nikon D2x with my Nikon 10-24 wide angle lens. I wanted to capture the full essence of the surroundings and that lens was the perfect choice.Inspiration
I'm a guitarist and love music. Any opportunity I can get to visit a Hard Rock, I'm going to take it. I loved the signage on the building and really wanted to get a shot that both captured the Hard Rock and the city in general, so the timing was great with all of the NYC cabs stopped at the red light.Editing
I didn't do much post processing with this photo. I just converted it to B&W and adjusted the contrast a bit to make it pop.In my camera bag
I normally carry quite a bit of gear, but I knew I was going to be doing a lot of walking around the city and didn't really want to carry more than I had to. On this particular day, I had my Domke shoulder bag with my Nikon D2x, 10-24 lens and 24-70 lens along with some extra batteries. This is an older photo. These days I usually have my Kelly Moore bag with my Nikon D4, my Sigma 70-200 and my Nikon 50 1.8 with my SB-600 flash, a Rode Go mic, and some extra batteries.Feedback
I didn't have a tripod with me, as I was packing light for a lot of walking. You'll need a slightly steady hand. I dropped my shutter speed a bit because I wanted to show the motion of the people walking, but I didn't want such a slow shutter speed that it was going to create a blurry image. This was made slightly easier by the fact that I was using such a wide lens. If I had been trying to catch a tighter shot with a bigger lens, keeping a steady hand might have been more of a challenge and any shake would have been accentuated. If you're not looking to create the motion blur with the people who are walking, you'll definitely need to be prepared to push your ISO a bit more.
