Location
I took this image near Calgary, Alberta. I was driving to a birding location when I noticed this bright yellow canola. I’m glad I made the pit stop because this is one of my favorite shots.Time
This was fairly early in the morning in the summer.Lighting
The sun was still low and the lighting was soft.Equipment
I used my Canon 7D Mk I and Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, as well as a tripod.Inspiration
I’m a sucker for decrepit barns in the prairies. Pair that with a beautiful canola field in bloom and it’s a perfect match.Editing
I shot this in RAW and did minimal post processing. In my camera bag
It depends on what I’m going to shoot. If I’m looking for wildlife, I usually have my telephoto lens and Canon 7D. If I’m doing landscape photography, I have wide lenses, filters and my full frame Canon body.Feedback
Timing is everything. This same field in midday light would look quite different. It’s best to do a recce of the area for the farms you like and then go back during early or late day lighting. In this situation, I hadn’t planned this. I’ve learned to stop when I see something that captures my eye because in different lighting, it won’t look the same.
