I took this shot at the beach area at Tropical Harbor Estates in Lake Placid,FloridaTime
I shot this around 1:30 in the afternoon.Lighting
It was a sunny day with few clouds.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D-90 and a Nikkor 70-300zoom lens.Inspiration
There is a family of Sandhill Cranes that are more or less permanent in the park. They were in the lake bathing so I decided to get some more pictures. I ended up that day with most of the shots being taken at a distance of between 5 and 30 feet. It is an experience to be that close to a bird that is 3 feet tall and a very long beak.Editing
I only post process for color to match what I see.In my camera bag
I carry minimal equipment. A Nikon D-90, a Nikkor 55-200 zoom lens, a Nikkor 70-300zoom lens and a Nikon SB-600 speedlite.Feedback
I will tell anyone who is going to shoot Sandhill Cranes, if the have been around people you can get reasonably close and get some great shots. You just have to be slow and easy and do not get between the adults and the young birds. I have gotten as close as 3 feet but was not comfortable as they do have a very long and sharp beak.
