Thx. I hope I will get some better set soon. Ring tubes for lens with no contact for AF sometime drives me crazy. :)

I used Canon 550D with 55-250 lens attached to three no-contact ringtubes. Shot is taken in swamp in time of sunset. Sunlight was comming from the left part, thats why flies back was so ligh-orange, usualy is much darker. Aperture can't be contoller through ring tubes with no contacts with camera, number of ring tubes decides the dof.

Thats some outstanding detail!!! I also echo another comment above, I would love to know what is used/how you achieve this level of detail...its what I aspire to with my Macros! Top stuff.

I did about 30 shots of that fly and this one was the only success. For adding more sharpness I used Noise Reduction in photoshop (after I finished work in camera raw), after that I created a new layer where I used High Pass filter on him and blend it (soft light) with a lower layer (original image). I do not use sharpness filters because they destroy edges between tones.

Thank you. Yes. I used cheap no contact extension tube ringa (they can be found on ebay for 2-5$) with 55-250mm canon lens attached. I love that lens because it allows me to shoot from distance, in that way you do not disturb insects and you have alot more time to take the shot. If you use wide angle lens on extension tubes you must be very close (2-4cm) and usually insects runs off, with this lens you can take 50-100 cm distance and take a good makro shot. With some better tele lens I think oyu could do far better. :)

Location
Photo was taken during one of my cycling rides through swamp forest (I travel with bicycle - not fan of a motorized vehicles). My initial idea was to find a good location with a lot of flowers and take closeup shots of a bees and wasps. Swampy region is located around river Karašica/Drava in Croatia.Time
It was a sunset. If you ask me a precise time, I would need to look to photos data.Lighting
Everything about this shot happened randomly. It was just when I saw what is happening and what sun did to swamp, everything looked unreal. I gues I was just at the right place in the right moment..., accidentally.Equipment
Canon Rabel T2i 550D, with 250mm Tele lens and few ring extenders that converted Tele lens into Macro one. No flash, no stabilizer, everything on custom settings.Inspiration
As I was shooting wasps and bees, while I was preparing to take the next shot, in time I moved my eyes behind camera this fly landed on the flower and scatter all bees, and when I saw the orange back of the fly how it glows because of sun that was directly shining on her I stopped focusing on bees and wasps and started to follow the fly around the swamp until I finally was able to take the shot you see now. It took me around one hour of trying to get the shot.Editing
Yes. I did increase contrast and sharpen the photo. I didn't want to mess with colors because I found that natural colors suit the best to feel of the photo. It's a swampy region and it should stay greenish/yellowish.In my camera bag
Canon Rabel T2i 550D, with 250mm Tele lens and few ring extenders that convert Tele lens into Macro one. I travel light when I am on the bike, so less camera equipment in the backpack means more water in backpack = longer rides. I am trying to do best I can with less.Feedback
Get out and let yourself involve in outside life. Observe the beauty of the moment, and when you are filled with enough good vibes, start exploring. Best things are the ones that come with a story to tell.
