Location
I took this photograph in Las Vegas at the Westcott Shootout Booth, Photoshop World 2012.Time
The image was taken in the evening inside the Mandalay Bay Convention Centre (PSW).Lighting
Various Westcott Equipment was used: Reflector, Lights, Soft Boxes etc. Thomas Welleford was hired by Model Experts as Frankenstein. Makeup and wardrobe were the exceptional work of Shelly Girard, Rayce Bird, Frank Ippolito and Ian Von Cromer.Equipment
My equipment was the Nikon D3S (1/60 sec at f/2.8, 70mm, ISO 160) hand held.Inspiration
I really wanted to start my studio and win the contest. What a proactive approach the Westcott Shootout experience is. It allowed me to observe how to light the scene/model, application of movie quality hair/makeup and to conceptualize by being a part of the shoot. It is nice to see how other peer photographer’s work. The mini seminars by featured Pro’s are a huge bonus! I am more inspired than ever. Because of the applicable learning approach Westcott provided me at Photoshop World Las Vegas 2012, I believe winning the contest encouraged me to be more creative in my post process, but to allow me to experiment with more creative lighting options.Editing
Being creative allows you to break the rules. I took many photographs and like different elements from individual images. First I extracted the arm so it would look like it was coming in the forefront of the camera. The expression of the head gave new breath to the photo…literally. I like dark backgrounds because it allows a subject to be prominent, shadows balance and highlights dance in harmony. My hope was to motivate your senses with filters and the misty breath to add a third dimension to the photograph. In my camera bag
My camera bag consists of a Nikon D3S, Nikon D800, Nikon D300, 70-200 & Fisheye Nikkor, 10-20 Sigma, a few filters, remote and small flash.Feedback
Keep shooting. When you least expect it, that moment will be the one photograph you love for some reason. Most of the time it is an expression captured. Revisit it and study why it interests you. Isolate the elements you want, blend and piece it together. Keep in mind DOF and Realism. It may be difficult to tell if it is a composite or not if you did a good job.! ;)
