Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a nearby private pond. As a self taught photographer, every opportunity is welcomed.

Time

I had photographed these Swans with five babies back in 2003. I was driving by on May 3, 2006 when I saw they had two babies. It was about 11am when I was able to get this shot of mom and her two little ones. Swans mate for life, but both the mom and dad had lost their mates. They were matched up with each other and no one thought they would have babies. Lucky for me and the many other people who stopped to watch or photograph them they did. When I was there a Department of Natural Resources person showed up to feed them as the owners were on vacation. She told me the back story and gave me her card. What a wonderful day enjoying the beauty of Swans who had a second chance!

Lighting

I relied on natural sunlight for this photo shot.

Equipment

This was shortly after I purchased my Canon 20D with a 28-135mm lens. No tripod was used.

Inspiration

The Swans are so beautiful and babies where a nice bonus.

Editing

No post-processing done on this one.

In my camera bag

Since my first digital camera was a Kodak EasyShare, I have one of those...The Canon 20D with a Promaster 28-300mm lens, Canon 7D with a 28-135mm lens, and extra batteries for both. A couple filters for the Canon 20D (polarized and cross-cut) Of course the rest of the usual suspects.....lens cleaner, cloths, batteries for the little camera, and extra memory cards.

Feedback

Patience is the key to capturing wildlife and being on the lookout for opportunities for what you are looking to capture. I live in Michigan where we say if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change. On that note, being aware of where your light is and what you are trying to accomplish. Best of luck to all photographers in getting your shot!
