I took this photo in my "home studio", also known as my basement. Mama was living in an animal shelter, and I took her from the shelter to my house to make portraits of her to help her get adopted.Time

Mama was living in a shelter and awaiting adoption. I volunteer my photographic services to various shelters and rescues to make strong portraits of the animals to help them get attention and, ultimately, adopted. Mama needed a little extra attention so I took her from the shelter to my home for a session. When I met her I imagined she was a society lady worthy of a formal picture. I draped on the boa and it was as if she knew the act. She laid down, crossed her paws, and sat beautifully for me. This is one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. And Mama was adopted three days later!Editing

Choose props and accessories suitable to the subject. Mama's face just begged for a boa. And take your time. I see people trying to take photos of their dogs and cats and expect the animal to understand exactly what to do. I give the animal lots of time to get comfy with me and the flashing lights and everything else, and then they tell me when they're ready.
