Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this in Alice's apartment in an assisted living residence in Toms River, NJ.

Time

Evening.

Lighting

This was a "behind the scenes" image shot in between formal portraits, so the lights was set up for classic 3:1 ratio lighting.

Equipment

Nikon D610 with Nikon 24-70 f2.8 lens. I used the Elinchrom Quadra system with the 39" Octabank as the main light and a Lastolite 24' Ezybox with an egg crate grid as fill.

Inspiration

I was working on a series of formal portraits featuring therapy dogs and the senior citizens they visit. This was a "grab shot" that I captured when we were taking a break and Alice reached over to give Simon a kiss. It is one of my favorite images of the hundreds I shot for the series.

Editing

Minimal in Lightroom.

Nikon D610, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, Nikon 70-200 f2.8, Nikon 12-24 f3.5.5.6, Nikon 10.5 f2.8, 2 Nikon SB-900 flashes, Nikon SU-800 flash trigger.

Feedback

When shooting portraits or other set up shots be alert for opportunities to notice opportunities to capture behind the scenes images. Often the best interactions between siblings, for example will be when you're not trying to get their attention at the camera.
