Behind The Lens

Location

This was done in my home studio, late at night after a very long day of working.

Time

Well I was working all day on other projects, it was cold out and my eyes had enough of the computer screen so I fired up my lights in the studio and started playing around. I had tried a few different techniques (things I would never do with clients) but really liked the look of the light coming from below. I worked on angles which took awhile since I was also the subject, the floor was littered with gaffers tape and I had lights, reflectors and softboxes all over the place. I tiptoed through the mess and finally settled on this image. I loved the look.

Lighting

It is just a game of inches, small movements until you are able to get the shadows just how you want them.

Equipment

Canon 5d MKIII, Canon 600 Speedlight, Canon ST-E3_RT Speedlite transmitter, a Canon trigger and a tripod from years ago with the name worn away.

Inspiration

I love shadows and I like strong blacks.

Editing

I used lightroom for general corrections and cataloging, I used Nik silver efex pro for the black and white conversion

In my camera bag

Canon 5D MKIII, Canon 70-200mm f2.8, Canon 85mm f1.8, Canon 50mm f1.4, Canon 24-105 f4, Canon 100mm f2.8, Canon 600 Speedlite, Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Tramitter, Pocket Wizard Plus III transceivers, various cables, Black Rapid straps, Sekonic light meter, batteries, batteries and more batteries all packed in my street walker think tank bag.
