This photo was taken in my friends front yard during a visit in Half Moon Bay California.Time
Mid morning fog was turning to jewel like spheres on this rose. The sun was starting to warm up things, so the condensation of the fog really worked to my advantage in my efforts to capture every detail.Lighting
The solid gray of the sky due to the fog around me was perfect lighting. The lack of glare form the sun and any wind made for a relatively easy capture. Shooting on the coast has it's advantages.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 with a 55-300 mm Nikkor DX autofocus lens. I shot this handheld.Inspiration
I was waiting for a friend out front of his house. He was taking some time, so I began investigating my surroundings. I looked closer at some of the flowers in his front yard and noticed that there was an excessive amount of dew on them. I began firing away at them as if the glory of the shining droplets would suddenly disappear at any minute. I was fortunate enough to get some really satisfying shots. This was my favorite among them.Editing
I did quite a bit of post processing with this image. The center of the flower is about all that retained it's original color. I wanted the rose to stand out from it's background so I darkened the background and deepened the colors using the Levels, Curves and Hue/Saturation in that order in the adjustments panel in Photoshop. Each adjustment layer was then adjusted to my satisfaction. I then merged the layers and used the unsharp mask feature before saving. In my camera bag
I carry 3 lenses in my bag. I carry a wide angle 10-24mm, a standard lens 18-55mm and a telephoto lens 55-300mm. They are all Nikkor DX lenses. I always shoot with my Nikon D7000 using either my Manfrotto tripod or I go handheld with my camera attached to an Indigo Marble shoulder strap. I also carry an extra battery and cleaning equipment. I pack all of this into a Case Logic backpack style camera bag.Feedback
I would have missed this shot if my friend had not taken such a long time to get ready. The fact that I was bored waiting for him allowed me some time to observe my surroundings. By familiarizing myself with the world around me, I gained a terrific photo opportunity. I enjoy filling down time with shutter releases. You never know what might come of these opportunities.
