Location
Drive 70 miles southeast of Tucson to Arizona Wine Country. Yes. Wine in Arizona. Once you leave the desert, you climb to wooded hills and grassland. Once you reach Sonoita, continue north to a dirt road that meanders through the vineyards. This should take about an hour. Then discover that you forgot your memory card. Argh! Drive another 50 miles (round trip) and be very grateful that have arrived in time for the summer Super Moon of 2013.Time
Approximately an hour after sunset.Lighting
Nope just stars and a great BIG moon coming up over the Huachuca Mountains.Equipment
Tripod for sure. Nikon D-7000 and a 70-270 mm Tamron lens.Inspiration
The super moon can been advertized and I knew I wanted to try my hand. The problem with living in Tucson for a shot like this is the mountains. In fact, I had practiced the night before and the moon had lost its golden hue by the time it breached the mountains. Question: where will I find a great horizon? Southeast Arizona. I also wanted an interesting foreground and thought a windmill would be perfect and, given that there are many windmills on the grasslands of SE Arizona, that's where I headed.Editing
Not a lot of Post Processing though I did remove some faint telephone poles along the horizon. Other than that, I boosted the exposure. The moon, however, was truly that bright and that intense color. Truly inspiring. In my camera bag
I travel with a tripod and a Really Right Stuff ball head. Usually, I take along a memory card. Duh! Hopefully that painful lesson will last a lifetime. I try to have an extra battery, circular polarizer, filters, flash, flashlight, knee pads, rain coat for the camera, jacket for me, hat.Feedback
A telephoto lens is a must as is a tripod.
