Location
This is a hometown photo. The give away are the Saguaro cactus putting me smack dab in the middle of the Sonoran desert in Tucson, Arizona. The specific location is the Saguaro National Monument East which snugs up against the Rincon Mountains.Time
Okay. A black and white at sunset in the desert does seem kinda crazy but that gnarly tree on the right just begged to be the center of attention and not that beautiful orange and pink sky on the horizon.Lighting
Late enough to get nice shadows but good light for detail though early for the golden hour. It is always helpful to have your cloud mojo working.Equipment
Shot with my Nikon D7000 and a tripod.Inspiration
Spring comes to the desert in mid-Feb. This rise was covered with leafing creosote, bright yellow Desert Marigold. The tips of the Ocotillo were bright red and Fairy Duster was covered in pink blossoms. And then there was this lone Mesquite tree, leafless and looking forlorn. But isn't that the lure of the lone tree photo? There's something poignant about the solitude and fortitude of a lone tree. The photo also speaks to the wise stubborness of the Mesquite which is the last desert plant to leaf, waiting until there is not a chance of a chill.Editing
This involves a simple conversion to BW.In my camera bag
Extra batteries, extra batteries, extra batteries. Extra memory card. (I won't bore you with the stories behind the attention to these two details).Feedback
Don't cut off the right side like I did.
