Location
This image was taken on La Jolla Shores Drive, just south of the large bends in the road and east of Scrips memorial Pier, in La Jolla, CATime
I shot this a little before noon. There is a space in the road where there are five of six of these, what I call Coral Trees growing all in a row. They are pretty spectacular to look at from any perspective growing in the odd angles they do, each of them unique in there own way, similar to Bonsai trees, albeit full size!Lighting
Harsh midday light. I tied to capture the the abstract shape of this tree in the full light so the light wouldn't be a factorEquipment
I had my Nikon D7200 with the Nikon 16-80mm F2.8-4 mounted on it. This is a monster kit for anybody interested. I had to dodge in and out of the traffic to get this shot, so I set the ISO to give me a very fast shutter (1/2500) at F5.6 since this was going to be hand held. I love tripods, but most of my shots are of the Impressionist school, similar to Street Photography, but often without the "street."Inspiration
I have driven by this row of trees for years, an the way to a recurring client's home, and had always wanted to get get out and shoot them. They are so foreign to the normal landscape, almost like something you might see in a Japanese garden. The light catches them and they are vibrant in color...Just special trees!Editing
My normal standard RAW developing was applied: sharpening 100, 0.5 in Lightroom, no masking adjustment, and Lens correction enabled. I lightened the orange color of the trunk and leaves, and slightly de-saturated them. I wanted the shape to be prominent, and not have it overshadowed by the color. In my camera bag
My 'bag" has grown into multiple bags! I have three Nikon bodies; D810, D600 and D7200. With them are an accumulated assortment of lenses: Nikon DX/ 10-24mm F3.5-4G and 16-80mm F2.8-4, FX/ 16-35 F4, 20mm F2.8D, 24-70 F2.8G, 58mm F1.4, 200-500 F/5.6, Sigma 40mm F1.4 Art, 85mm F1.4 Art, Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 G2. I also carry two Nikon SB-700 flashes, two mini soft boxes an assortment of filters, and two tripods, one light weight, and a sturdier heavy one for serious weather. Mostly when I am driving around I only have the D7200 and 18-80mm... It is my "beater", although it is in almost perfect condition.Feedback
Always have a camera with you. You botch every shot you don't take. Travel slowly. Really take in your surroundings. Make note of the places in the road you look forward to. Those are the spots where your heart shots are... Keep shooting...I have taken at least 5000 shots of object in my living room from my couch, practicing every conceivable combination camera/lens settings. It doesn't matter what you shoot when you are practicing...
