Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on the lower section of the James Irvine Trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park

Time

This was our second trail of the day. The time of the photo was slightly after noon. The sunlight and "God rays," we're delightful!

Lighting

100% natural light.

Equipment

The shot was taken with a Nikon D600. I had a Nikon 16-35mm f/4 lens mounted on it. The details of the exposure: 22mm, ISO 800, 1/500, @f/4. You might wonder why such a high ISO? The redwood Forest can be very dim since so much of the sunlight is blocked by these enormous trees. What made this image different, is the sun had an opening to shine through brightly!

Inspiration

Every minute in the Redwood Forest is inspiring to me. I feel more alive there than anywhere on Earth. I was simply trying to find a perspective that expressed my sense of wonder. That main tree in the image had a diameter of approximately 18 feet!

Editing

I bracketed 3 shots, 2 stops apart, handheld, and combined them in Lightroom/Photoshop. Planning for this strategy was partly why I shot at 1/500.

In my camera bag

I have three Nikon bodies, D810, D600 and D7200. I have a Black Rapid double strap that has been modified to support a third body if I choose. I have a series of primes, Nikon 20mm f2.8, Sigma 40mm f1.4, Nikon 58mm f1.4, Sigma 85mm f1.4, Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro. For zooms my bag contains, Nikon 16-35mm f/4, Nikon 24-70 f2.8G, Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2, Nikon 200-500mm f5.6, Nikon 10-24mm DX, Nikon 16-80mm f2.8-4 DX. I choose what best fits what I am shooting, or at least what think I might encounter. On a hike through a Redwood forest, I would likely select, the 16-35mm, 70-200mm and 105 macro, since focusing with your feet is rarely possible...

Feedback

If you have never been in a Redwood forest, take a body that is good in low light and a normal zoom. Just go marvel and have fun!
