I have shots of that tree and the one behind right which I have re-edited several times. There are so many variations. Love that beach. your recent shot is beautiful. Love the reflections.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on Driftwood Beach in Jekyll Island, GA.

Time

This was taken at sunrise on Christmas Eve. You have to love the weather in the south.

Lighting

I got to the beach very early and was the first person there. A gentleman arrived just after me and we were the only two roaming the beach until about 15 minutes before the sun came up. Then it got busy. Luckily, I had scouted out a few spots and when the sun was getting close, I was able to get this spot and not have any one standing in front of me ruining the scene.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon 6D with the stock 24-105mm f/4.0 lens. It was taken on a tripod in a series of three shots merged together for a panorama.

Inspiration

These trees are beautiful! I’ve been blessed to see a lot of majestic places, but this one is special. On this particular morning, with the tide retreating like it was, and the clouds so spectacular, I couldn’t pass up this scene. I love the water and sun. Add in a reflection and some incredible trees, you have something truly worth capturing.

Editing

I edited this shot in Lightroom. It is a panorama combining three shots. I enhanced the lights and darks, while adding selecting exposure edits. Since I shoot in raw, the colors were slightly flat, so I brought them back to where they were when I shot it. Overall, it was a pretty basic edit.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Canon 5D Mark IV, ND Filters, circular polarizer filters, a 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 50mm, tripod, and the ever handy trigger release. Recently, I added the Peak Design Capture clip and absolutely love it. If I’m feeling frisky, I have a Canon M50 I will lug along and strap one of my lenses to.

Feedback

Patience is a virtue. Also, you can catch up on sleep. Arrive early and walk around. I can’t tell you how many photographers I see camped out in one spot. On multiple occasions, the shot I thought was going to be my keeper doesn’t end up being my best one. Follow the light and just keep shooting. There is beauty all around us, we just have to have the vision to see it.
