Tshukudu is an homemade wooden bike that is prevalent in Congolese province of North Kivu. There are thousands of them in Goma and neighbouring villages. It is an testament to Congolese indomitability and pragmatic ingenuity. They are capable of carrying up to half a ton of cargo or several people. They have lifted many people in North Kivu out of poverty. There is an saying I often heard in this area:"If you marry tshukudu driver, you will not die of hunger". Since the area around Goma is hilly, one can often see these guys speeding downhill with heavily loaded tshukudus with such a grace, nonchalance and control, it is fascinating to watch.
