Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of a Clematis Seed Head was taken in my garden in late morning Summer sunlight, Manawatu, New Zealand.

Time

This photo has always been a favorite. I was drawn to the feathery seed head as the late morning sunlight highlighted every tiny detail. I had been enjoying all the perfumes and the vision of my flowers while soaking up the sun when I spotted the seed head and raced inside to get my camera before the sun disappeared behind a cloud. The photo was taken at 11.17 am on a sunny February morning in Summer.

Lighting

The sunlight was all I needed to create such a stunning image. The sun highlighted every detail of the feathery seed head. I then positioned myself so that the image also stood out against the grey fence behind.

Equipment

I used my Canon Powershot SX60 HS camera, hand held, with no flash to create this image.

Inspiration

I'm always inspired by images from my garden, the insects, flowers and birds which visit every day. This Clematis seed head drew my eye due to it's clarity and feathery detail set against the grey fence. It reminded me of a toy windmill that I would hold in my hand and blow on to turn the blades. It was simply a beautiful vision that drew my eye, to me it also looked like a tiny star shining in a grey sky.

Editing

This image was cropped slightly to center the seed head.

In my camera bag

I always carry two cameras with me. Currently I am using a Canon Powershot SX540 HS for its lightness and macro detail together with a Nikon Coolpix P950 for its zoom capabilities, especially for shooting birds at a distance. I also have a monopod in the bag which is great for setting up easily and also for use as a handle if required. The bag also contains extra sim cards and charged batteries for both cameras.

Feedback

I always encourage people to photograph what they see around them. Open eyes and be inspired by the beauty within reach. The home garden and trees/plants in your local area host numerous birds, insects and flowers. I'm always looking for that shot that is special or different among what we would call the normal of everyday life.
