Behind The Lens
Location
Vero Beach, Florida, under the Highway 60 causeway. There is a fishing pier next to a waterside café where my wife and had eaten lunch on that day. We went for a walk and I had my camera with me.Time
A little after 12:00 noon. The shot is actually into the sun, but the bridge structure blocks most of the glare.Lighting
Because the shot was into the sun, I was worried about the exposure problems that brings, but the composition was so perfect and it was "now or never" for the shot. However, the bright glare actually works to enhance the symmetry in the composition and helps lead the eye into the center of the shot. As in music, sometimes breaking the rules leads to interesting results.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 with a Sigma 17-70 at full extension. No tripod was needed.Inspiration
I love compositional elements such as juxtaposition and symmetry. I had been trying to get shots of the boats in harbor the next to the bridge, but those shots weren't thrilling me, and I couldn't let this shot go. I did a number of bracket shots for exposure and focal length -- this was the best capture.Editing
I shoot in raw, so some post production work is necessary. I use Lightroom for tweaks to color, exposure, white balance, etc. -- basically the same things one would do in a dark room while processing negatives and final prints. I come from the days of 35mm SLR's and emulsion film, so I like a photograph to look like a photograph. Just my personal preference. In my camera bag
My D7000, a Tamaron 70-300, Sigma 17-70, a Speedlight SB-600 (although I use natural light as much as possible), a polarizing filter, cleaning equipment, and of course at least one pair of reading glasses!Feedback
Going all the way back to my youth and days of 35mm SLR's, I always try to take my camera bag with me whenever I can -- even on short errands. Most of my best captures are these accidental, unplanned, shots that catch my eye. Over the years I've come to look at everything as if I'm looking through my viewfinder. That is what gives me the inspiration to turn ordinary images into (hopefully) intriguing captures.
