Location
On the shore of the Indian River Lagoon in Palm Bay, FL. I was on a bluff overlooking this old dock.Time
It was early -- I was on my way to work and saw the image...I had left early in case there was an opportunity for a shot, and I couldn't pass this one up.Lighting
The sun had been up about half an hour, and being spring, it was still low in the south. Since I was facing east, the sun was at an angle, and it lit up the foggy mist perfectly.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D40X, with a kit lens. I believe the fact that I always shoot in raw mode let the beauty of the shot come through even though it was taken with economy gear. I now use a D7000 with better lenses, but I don't know if they would have improved this shot.Inspiration
The effect of the misty fog, mirror like surface of the lagoon, and angle of the dock leading into the center of the image. In the spring and fall we can get these slightly foggy mornings on the Indian River Lagoon, and I'm always looking for cool effects from the light and mist.Editing
Just basic post processing for tweaks to color, contrast, etc. I've always felt the belter the original image, the less post processing it needs. Raw gives one the ability to get the best result, but I come from the days of emulsion and 35mm cameras, and I like a photograph to look like a photograph. In my camera bag
Now days it's a Nikon D7000 with a Tamaron 70-300 and a Sigma 17-70. I also carry a Nikon Speedlight SB 600.Feedback
I always carry my camera bag wherever I go (if possible) so I can get those shots that come up as a unique surprise. I have so many shots like this -- shots where everything was perfect, and shots I could never recreate. The more I do this, the more I find myself always looking for the next one. My advice would be to always look at everything as if you were looking through your viewfinder. The amount of possibilities out there are staggering once you begin to see them.
