Big Island, Hawai'i
About a month ago, I was fortunate to witness surface lava flows at the 61G site in Kilauea, Hawai'i. I had planned on checking out the fire hose before dawn, but the night before learned that surface flow activity had returned (after several months of non-activity).
The hike out was taxing. Guiding me to the active field was the red and orange glow, which was cast against a pitch black night. I arrived at the flows just before sunrise.
The area with active lava was huge, and the heat was intense! Witnessing glowing molten rock oozing out of black earth was magical and exhilarating! As the sunlight gradually filled over the horizon, I scrambled to find a shot. Since the flow is constantly moving, so is the composition. Here is one from that time.
