Behind The Lens
Location
In the wilderness of central northern New Brunswick, Canada, there's a beautiful little lake that's known only to those locals who like spending time in the forest. The lake is just over a km long and there are a few camps along the sides.Time
This photo was taken at sunset one evening in September, 2015, as part of a series of engagement photos for the couple in the kayak.Lighting
Because the photo was taken as they were going toward the setting sun, there was a lot of light to contend with.Equipment
This photo was taken, handheld, with a Canon T3i using a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 telephoto zoom lens. No other equipment was used. I have since upgraded my camera to a Canon T6i.Inspiration
The lake is my happy place and I spend quite a bit of time there. Each evening, I sit by the side of the lake and watch for the possibility of a sunset. The couple in the kayak had asked for their engagement photos to be taken in this tranquil setting. That evening, as they set out to kayak in the golden light of the setting sun, it seemed like the perfect photo to end our day together.Editing
I use both Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. At the time this photo was taken, I was still fairly new to both.In my camera bag
Besides my Canon camera with the 18-55 mm f/3.5 lens, I always bring my 70-300mm f/4-5.6 telephoto zoom lens, a tripod or monopod, lens wipes, extra memory cards and lots of spare batteries.Feedback
When there's a particular spot, a favorite place, that you've taken many photographs of, keep on taking the photos and watch for the differences, the changes in the light, nature's seasonal changes and, best of all, the improvements in your own abilities.
