Thank you so much! I got lucky that day and was able to capture what I feel is a very emotionally strong image.

Location
This photo was taken at Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in Columbia, South CarolinaTime
I was the first person through the gate at the zoo when they opened that morning. I like to get in before the crowds so I can spend time photographing the animals without feeling pressured by the crowds.Lighting
The gorilla was sitting in a shaded area so the light was subdued. There was a shadow on the concrete on which the gorilla was seated so it made darkening the background pretty easy in Lightroom.Equipment
I used a Sony ILCE-6000 with with a Sony 55-210mm lens.Inspiration
When I arrived at the exhibit for the lowland gorillas this female was sitting right up against the glass. I was the only person in the room and took some time to just observe her. When I looked at her foot it shocked me just how similar it was to my own hand.Editing
I processed the photo in Lightroom. The goal of my processing was to darken the background and bring out the texture of the foot. I wanted people to be able to see the ridges on the prints and to be able to see that this gorilla's foot and our human hands are so very similar. In my camera bag
Today my bag usually has my Sony ILCE-600 with a 55-210mm lens and my Canon EOS-R with a 24-105mm lens. I don't typically carry a flash as I'm not one who likes to shoot with a flash.Feedback
Get there early. Be patient.
