Location
This photo was taken of a friends pet, and was done at my studio. Originally the idea was to test new lights, power packs and various other new equipment, but I quickly discovered how much more of a challenge it was going to be to get the dogs undivided attention.Time
It was the middle of the day, but it did not matter as I was using stidio lighting in a controlled environment.Lighting
This was done with a three light set-up. A background light with a 10 degree grid, an overhead light with softbox and directional grid, and a main light with octo soft box set of to the left of the subject. I also used a reflector board to fill in some light on the right of the subject.Equipment
I used a canon 5D with a 24-105 f4 L lens. Shot at about 85mm at f5.6 and 1/125 of a second. Tripod, cable release, Speedotron Black Line power supplies with 3 202 heads and of course "Doggy Treats"!Inspiration
Originally, I was just going to test out some new equipment, but quickly found that it was working perfectly and as planned, so my attention soon became trying to connect the dog to the camera. Getting a portrait of an animal, I believe, requires the animal to make a connection with the lens that captures the beauty and essence of itself.Editing
I shoot everything in RAW file format. This was post processed very minimally, setting only white balance, black levels, shadow detail, capture sharpen and very slight crop.In my camera bag
I am a proud Canon shooter. I now carry in my bag a 5D III, a 7D II, Canon 50 & 180 macro lens, a 16-35 f4 L IS, 24-105 f4 L IS, 70-200 f2.8 L IS, 85 f1.8 and a Sigma 150-600 f5-6.3 OS Sport lens. Various sizes of circular polarizers, ND Filters (of various densities), cable release, extra cards, extra batteries, two carbon fiber tripods and a 580 EX II Flash unit with a Gary Fong diffuser. It all fits nicely into a LowePro back pack that weighs in at just under 50 lbs....... Gosh, I need to lighten this load!Feedback
Patience, treats, a good set-up and a willing subject is all you need.... Mostly patience and treats!
