Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the La Paz Waterfall Garden in Costa Rica in November of 2015.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon, Light in Central America goes from about 6 AM to 6 PM year around, so 430 PM light can be very beautiful and soft.

Lighting

These frogs are mostly nocturnal, they are sensitive to flash and bright light, so no flash was used, and the frog was placed in a shaded area with filtered overhead skylight filling the indoor living sanctuary. Because of the lower light, I used a higher ISO sacrificing noise for a faster shutter speed.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5 D III coupled with a Sigma 150-600 mm f5-6.3 Sport lens at 600 MM and f6.3. The ISO was 3200 and the shutter speed was 1/250 of a second. I used a very solid carbon fiber Gitzo tripod with a Wimberly Gimbal type II head. I used a cable release.

Inspiration

The amazing contrast and colors of these amphibians were a photographers dream to not only see, but be able to photograph. I tried to take images that showed some sort of interaction with the lens. Mostly I was excited to have a chance to use my new Sigma 150-600 lens, which I think did a crazy good job on such a cool subject.

Editing

I post processed this RAW image file with Adobe LR CC. I did use the noise reduction sliders to combat the high ISO noise that was introduced by the 3200 setting. I did clean a few dirt specs off the frogs back and off the leaf. This is a FF shot.... no cropping!

In my camera bag

Its a 50 pound bag.... Canon 5 D III, 7D II, 85mm f 1.8, 16-35 f 4 L IS, 24-105 f 4 L is, 70-200 f2.8 L IS, 50 macro, 180 L Macro, 150-600 f5-6.3 Sigma Sport, 1.4 extender, 2.0 extender, macro ring flash, 580 and 580II flash guns, various size circular polarizers, various size and density ND filters, extra batteries and cards, cable release and a few tools and cleaning odds and ends.

Feedback

Take your time, make sure you have everything set and ready to go. When you find these guys, slow movements seemed to keep them from jumping all the time. Many of these frogs are very poisonous and should not be handled, if you do, use rubber latex gloves and do not rub your eyes!
