Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in The Glacier Basin in The Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

Time

I took this shot in the late morning. Given the location, The Rocky Mountains, the light doesn't get straight on and harsh till later in the day. There were plenty of clouds to soften any bounced light from the snow covered peaks as well.

Lighting

No extra light source was used.

Equipment

I was using my Nikon D810 with the Nikkor 200-500 F5.6 lens. It was on a Manfrotto tripod with their cradle style camera mount.

Inspiration

We took this trip for my wife to attend a Graphite drawing workshop. This included 2 half day trips into the National Park to take reference pictures with the class. While she was busy drawing was exploring for good areas. We had a list of animals to try to photograph, most of which were found!

Editing

I don't usually like to heavily post process my photographs. I shoot in raw, so a little color balance, sharpen and crop. Take it right while you are there! F8 and BE THERE!

In my camera bag

Outdoor shoots I will always have the D810 and the D7100 bodies. Lenses usually are, 50, 17-35, 70-200, 200-500. All Nikon.

Feedback

I thought it would be a lot harder to photograph the animals on our list than it was. Being in a National Park, all the animals are protected. They were very used to nosy humans with cameras! I still recommend using caution around mothers and their offspring though. Knowing the lifestyle of the animal you wish to shoot helps. Talk to a few locals, hire a guide, or cheat and follow a tour jeep! Be prepared for all types of weather..... If you are after wild animals in their environment.....Get up, suit up and shut up! F8 and be there!
