In the village of Politzi Generosa, where tourists normally do not go, I saw an old woman looking out through her window. The bars of her balcony, and the wires on which she dried her laundry look like the cultural prison defining the limits of her life, as women of her generation were not seen outside their homes unless accompanied by her male relatives or in a group of women. So, she lived through her long years as a virtual prisoner.
