This image was taken on my back patio using only the spa fence, I am a big fan of taking everyday objects that are usually overlooked and bringing attention to them. I love how the simplicity of something can be turned into such a powerful image... that is the magic of photography.Time
In this image I used the afternoon light, it was just after 3.00pm, It was the only time the light was right for this image to be taken, so it was a matter of waiting until the sun had moved into the right position to light up the spa area.Lighting
I love working with natural light were ever possible, However, with natural light you will need a lot of patience as you can be waiting for hours to get the light you are looking for, even then there are no guarantees the the light will be right anyway. You are also bound by time as natural light does not wait for you to get the shot you are wanting, so it is important to have a clear vision of the image you want to capture.Equipment
This was a very simple image by that I mean I only used my Cannon EOS 500D with a 85mm prime lens, it was taken at F1.8, ISO 100 @ 1/125.Inspiration
I wanted to capture an image that lets the viewer question what is happening in the image and then create their own story, for example it this a guilty man serving time and if so for what crime or is this a innocent man down on his luck waiting on a breadline somewhere. The inspiration was to invoke some kind of emotion when looking at the image.Editing
Of course an image isn't complete with out post processing, that is like serving the cake with out the icing. Again this was a very basic process, I always shoot in color then I convert to black and white in PS. I did a slight dodge and burn on the right hand and I added 10% grain to the image. In my camera bag
The staples of my camera bag is my Cannon EOS 500D, I will always take my 85mm & 60mm prime lenses as well as my filters....( polarize, ND's and IR) I will always take my monfrotto tri-pod and shutter release cable.Feedback
The best advise I could give someone wanting to capture a similar image is to KEEP IT SIMPLE, sometime less can say more. Have a look at what you have around you, get creative and have fun trying different things.... simple things like dropping an orange into a bowl of melted chocolate (for contrast) or using some cutlery to capture reflections. You don't need a lot of fancy or expensive equipment you just need time, patience, imagination and a camera.
