Great B/W !!!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took a morning to go to the Jersey shore and get in some beach scenes.

Time

I had stumbled upon a surfer competition and had been trying to take some photos of the surfers with not much luck. I had been sitting on this pier and decided to try a long exposure this was about 1pm

Lighting

It was cloudy but bright and I wasnt able to get a long enough exposure so I had to use several ND filters to get a long enough exposure to smooth out the waves.

Equipment

My trusty Nikon D7100, my 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 nikon lens, since this was a long exposure a tripod was necessary. I used a Vu filter holder with several ND filters to give me a 1.6 sec exposure at F11.

Inspiration

I had been taking some classes in both long exposure and B&W processing. I loved the way the waves were breaking over the pier and wanted to get a softer, painterly feel to the waves.

Editing

I was not expecting to turn this into a B&W because the pier had this great dark color with a nice green slime on it but once I had it on my screen the color took away from the waves breaking on over the pier which is what I wanted to focus on. B&W post processing really simplifies the image.

In my camera bag

I always have my trusty D7100 and at least 2 or 3 lenses with me. Depending on what I am going out to shoot it could be 16-85mm, 70-210mm, a wide angle a macro or just my nifty fifty. I usually have at least one tripod in my car and I usually have a pouch of filters as well.

Feedback

I love to try new processess it gives me new ways of looking at a scene and new tools to use for future images. I may not ever use all the things I learn but it gives me different options if I want to. If you want to try to capture long exposure, using ND filters, a tripod and patients is a must. I started out with the screw on type ND filters but eventually purchased a filter holder, it allows you to stack you ND filters without vignetting and extending your exposure time to give you the look that you want. There are phone apps that can help you determine what filters to use to get the length of exposure you want. I dont always use them sometimes trial and error work for me and sometimes the ones I think are mistakes become the ones I like most.
