Location
This photo was taken at a loch not too far from where I live called Loch Leven, it is situated in Fife, Scotland.Time
I took this just after the start of the blue hour one very cold morning, the lights in the distance are a nearby town.Lighting
As it was so dark, not surprisingly ay that time of the morning, I had the camera on a tripod and took a long exposure and was rewarded not only with the smoothing out of the water but also the lovely colour you can see.Equipment
I used a NikonD7100 and a Sigma 10-20mm, the tripod is a Marsace carbon fibre.Inspiration
The Loch is quite beautiful in the daylight but I wanted an early morning shot, I was hoping for a little mist as well but that just didn't happen.Editing
A little bit of exposure tweaking as I didn't get it quite right and some lens calibration. In my camera bag
My D7100, the 10-20mm Sigma and 18-300mm Nikon 3.5 if I am doing landscapes, which is the majority of my work. I have an 85 & 35mm for portrait work. I also carry ND filters, remote release cable and spare batteries.Feedback
Plan your shots well in advance, if taking an early morning shot like this it is a good idea to visit the spot in the daylight to scope out the best location, then when you do the shoot make sure not to forget any important kit, so double check everything. I also use PhotoPills and the Photographers Ephemeris for researching my locations beforehand.
