This photo was taken on a sunset cruise along the Na Pali coast of Kauai. My husband and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to the Islands of Hawaii and Kauai. The previous day we had driven to Waimea Canyon, stopped at all the overlooks - but the clouds and fog were so thick that we could barely see the canyon, much less see the coastline from the peaks. This shot was an attempt to look the opposite direction at the peaks. It was so gorgeous that I took several pictures along this stretch of the coast. After taking this picture, there was a brief rain shower and the clouds cleared away, leaving us with a clear view of the cliffs on the rest of the trip.Time
Our trip was in mid-May, 2014. It had already been an incredible cruise - designed to explore the Na Pali coast and enjoy the sunset over the ocean, we had encountered a pod of whales still lingering in the warm waters long after the usual season. The picture was taken in the late afternoon or early evening.Lighting
The sun sinking in the west and the sky, mostly cloudy. That combination provided the lighting for this irresistible shot.Equipment
We were on a small boat with a number of people - no room for any special equipment. I used a Nikon Coolpix 820 to take this shot as I was kneeling on a bench in the inside cabin of the boat - looking through an open window.Inspiration
As we traveled along the coast, we had been in and out of the cloud and drizzle. I had just moved to this position, and this view of the cliffs in the clouds and mist was so jaw dropping that I had to act quickly to get the picture.Editing
I am a novice .to photography and processing - in 2014, I used only Picasa. The only processing I did was cropping the photo. In my camera bag
I've upgraded a bit since 2014. I have a Nikon D5300 and generally carry 3 lenses - 18-55 mm, 55-200 mm , 55-300 mm.Feedback
Since this was shot from a moving cruise ship, I think there was some luck involved. But, I would advise that you find a comfortable, unimpeded spot to view the scenery and keep your eyes open. Take shots of all the sights that thrill and amaze you - if you love the sight, others will too.
