Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while I was riding along with my boyfriend to work in the oil fields in northwestern North Dakota (shhh don't tell anyone). At one of the sites we stopped at, I saw this abandoned, old house in the middle of the field. It was a pleasant, cloudy day, so I decided to take a walk with my dog to check out the house and take a peek inside. Upon doing so, I scared a Great Horned Owl that was apparently using the house as its roosting site, oopsies! The house was quite dilapidated, and just on the verge of collapsing. I decided to not go inside, and just enjoy the view from the outside. There was still a few furnishings left behind. I could just picture the family that lived there long ago living a more simple, but harsh life in the Great Northern Plains.

Time

This shot was taken in the late afternoon. It was a beautiful cloudy day in the high prairies!

Lighting

The natural lighting that day was perfect for conveying the house's state of disrepair, and the harsh life of the northern plains.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S5. I did take other shots with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70, but they didn't quite catch my eye and convey the same message as this shot did.

Inspiration

As soon as I saw this old house and the beautiful rolling fields surrounding it, I envisioned the shot I wanted. The landscape of North Dakota, although boring to some, inspired me to take this award winning shot.

Editing

The only post-processing I did consisted of using an HDR filter in the app Snapseed.

In my camera bag

I consider myself a simpleton and don't like carrying around a lot of gear. For the majority of the time, I just carry around my phone and Panasonic Lumix FZ70, which is a very versatile, light-weight camera that has 60x optical zoom. It gives me more freedom to move around and explore various field of views and angles. Other times I will also bring along my bulky (but trusty) Nikon D70 with one 75mm lens and one 300 mm lens.

Feedback

Look at the subject with your eyes first, not your camera. I think a lot of photographers forget that we inherently have two incredible lenses: our eyes. Explore the subject and the surroundings with your eyes, ears, smell, and touch even. The story will unfold right before your eyes and your camera.
