Behind The Lens

Location

Just down the street from the Hyatt Place in Fremont, California, there is a dirt road leading to a small parking lot with a few park benches. Walking further down the barricaded portion of this dirt road you find yourself at the tip of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay Nation Wildlife Refuge. This photo was taken from a bridge going over an inlet, which rises and falls with the tide. I have seen all types of marine wildlife there, from various types of sea or water fowl to sea otters.

Time

This image was taken just at dusk. I was headed across the bridge to setup for a sunset shot across the water. As I came up on the bridge I we saw each other. This was literally a shoot out between how fast the bird could get away and how fast I could set down (drop) the tripod and sling my camera up and shoot.

Lighting

Nothing about this shot was planned. As for the lighting, I wish it were better, actually, with better focus.

Equipment

I had a Canon Rebel XT with a Canon EF 75-300mm 4-5.6, Zoom Lens. I had this lens on as the walk out to the location provided many longer distance shots of wildlife, including this Great White Egret.

Inspiration

Given the timing, equipment and proximity, it was a split decision to either try and get the shot or be miserable that I hadn't tried. I honestly wasn't expecting the shot to be that good at all. I still think it could be better.

No, this is the original version of the image.

In my camera bag

In my primary bag I carry a Canon 7D, Canon 28-135mm Zoom, Canon 100-400mm Zoom and a Sigma 50mm Macro with various accessories.

Feedback

Always have a camera ready, ALWAYS. I carry my bag in the front seat of the car, side pocket facing me. I do all this and I still miss the shot, sometimes. I am a firm believer that some of the best shots and moments are when you come upon the shot, face to face with it, rather than setup up for it. We all setup for the shot, that's what we do, but sometimes the journey is just as good or better than the destination.
