Location
Hi shot this image at an orphanage in Haiti. I was writing a story on a grassroots organization and their work at this orphanage in Port-au-PrinceTime
It was the middle of the day, I believe. Maybe early afternoon.Lighting
Yeah, it was tough. The organization I was writing a piece on does dance, and the kids were all running around and there was a lot of dust in the air. Moreover, the room was poorly lit. So, I found a spot by a window where some nice ambient light was streaming in softly. I got some cool stills for the story from that location.Equipment
I shot a canon 60D here with a 50mm f/1.8 lens. There was no tripod and I didn't release a flash. I tend to prefer natural light for the photojournalism work.Inspiration
Well, how could I not be inspired. I mean check out this guy's eyes. He held so much power in them, and I'm just glad I was able to capture it properly.Editing
Obviously it's a black and white conversion which I did entirely in Lightroom. I didn't really have to do much processing otherwise. I drew a bit of the highlights to draw out his eyes, and messed with the levels a bit. But it wasn't that significant. In my camera bag
These days I travel with a Canon 6D, Canon 60D, 16-35mm f/4, 50mm f/1.4, 70-200mm f/2.8, and of course all the accessories like filters and tripods.Feedback
Don't force it. So many times people really try to force these photojournalistic style images and are too in the face of people. Instead, make yourself a friend to people before. Make sure they know that you're not a threat. Then, patiently take your shots when they become available.
