Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken about a mile from where I live, in rural Alberta, Canada.

Time

We had been snowed in for almost a week. We live on a dead end road, so it's not a first priority for snow plowing. We had several feet of snow, and bitterly cold temperatures. After the snow plow came, on the first sunny day, I went for a drive to get snow photos. This was midafternoon, on a cold, cold day with the sun low in the south. The bright sun made the snow sparkle which adds another element to the photo.

Lighting

The sun was low and from behind the horses. I took advantage of the timing, as it created beautiful light shining through their hair, creating a unique outline, and good shadows.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000 and a 55-300 mm lens. It was hand held...too cold of a day to even think about setting up a tripod.

Inspiration

I noticed the horses, with sunlight gracing the tips of their coat. Between that light, the snow so deep you can only see the upper lart of the fence, and being so cold you can see their breath, I had to take a photo. They were very intent on what I was doing.

Editing

I do minimal post-processing. This photo was cropped, and the brightness toned down a small amount.

In my camera bag

I live in two countries, so have different camera bodies in both places. However, I do take lenses with me when I travel..maybe one day I will have complete duplicate gear. I have a Nikon D7000 and a Nikon D5300, so of course one of these is always with me. My 'go to' lens, is a Nikkor 55-300mm AF-S. I am more drawn to intimate lamdscapes and close ups. I pack along an 18-105 mm, for those times I do want a greater point of view. And, I always have 2 fully charged spare batteries, an extra SD card, and my cleaning kit.

Feedback

In spite of cold, and snow, there are breath taking moments to be captured in winter. Winter scenes are magical, whether on a sunny day, or one that is foggy and hoar frost hangs on trees, grasses and fences. Even animals in winter have a different appearance because of their thick winter coats, or the snow clinging to their coat, or that you can see their breath in the cold. Take advantage of these opportunities, and look around...make the most of that days opportunities.
