Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home, which is farmland in Central, Alberta, Canada. We like to walk, regardless of the weather, and this was on one of those winter walks.

Time

We had walked down to the river on a sunny afternoon. As we returned home, late afternoon, the sun was getting low in the sky, casting these magnificent shadows theough the trees on to the sparkling drifts of snow

Lighting

The sun is so low in the aky at this time of year, it is shining almost horizontal theough the trees. I had to stop and take photos. This image would be gone in minutes as the sun sets rapidly.

Equipment

This is a handheld shot, with my Nikon D7000 and a AF-S Nikkor 70-300 mm. This goes with me everywhere, inspite of the size, the gear hangs around my neck.

Inspiration

We rounded a corner in the trail, and as we looked down the next section of trail, I was struck with beauty of all these windblown piles of snow. The trail had been plowed a few days previously, and with several days of additional snow and wind, this scene was created. Of course my man and dog had to patiently wait while I took photos from every angle.

Editing

I normally underexpose my photos by one or two stops, however with the brightness of the snow, I used Snapseed for ipad to tone down the brightness by a few stops, which made the shadows pop. And a slight adjustment to sharpening as well as a minor crop to remove a bit of treeline in the top corner.

In my camera bag

When I am on a casual walk like this, it's my Nikon D7000 with the AF-S Nikkor 70-300 lens. When I am deliberately going out to scout for photos, I also have my pack with a Nikkor 18-55 mm lens, several filters, my cleaning kit, manual, a couple of small flashlights, and three charged batteries. I may or may not have my tripod.

Feedback

My advice is to not let weather deter you from getting out. This day was probably minus 15 C, and a glorious day for a walk. Fingers get cold as I cannot make all the adjustments on the camera with gloves on. I need to invest in some good gloves that will allow me to spend more time taking pictures in cold weather.
