Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Biscayne National Park in south Florida, at the end of the jetty looking out into Biscayne Bay.

Time

I would have to say that this particular sunrise was probably the best and most productive shoot I've had so far. Interestingly, that morning, the fog was so heavy before I left that I had seriously considered not going. Needless to say, the fog had lifted and the conditions were ideal once I got there.

Lighting

In a case like this, artificial lighting doesn't come into play obviously. As always though, early morning light can be a special time to shoot and this sunrise was no exception.

Equipment

I used a Sony SLT-A58 with a Sony 3.5-5.6/18-55 lens and Vanguard tripod.

Inspiration

Sunrise and sunset are my favorite times to shoot...particularly over water when there will be some clouds in the sky. I never know exactly why a specific situation "looks good" to me, but the boat heading into the sunrise amid such calm waters was an irresistible opportunity.

Editing

There was no post processing on this photo. I've only just started to do any post processing at all and want to keep that to a minimum and let the original capture speak for itself.

In my camera bag

Along with the Sony SLT-A58 and Sony 3.5-5.6/18-55 lens I carry a pair of Minolta lenses...a 70-210 and a 28-100.

Feedback

Time sensitive moments, like sunrise or sunset, mean you should be prepared and get there early. Be ready to take advantage of any opportunity...the lighting changes quickly. And be open to whatever shots open up...avoid being overly focused on what you planned to shoot.
