This is the swing bridge over the Erskine River in Lorne on the Great Ocean Road.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken at Point Danger, Torquay, Victoria, Australia. Torquay is on the Surf Coast and is the official start of the Great Ocean Road. Point Danger is the local site of the ANZAC War Memorial.

Time

This is one of my most liked images. I was doing some sunrise shots and walking between the surf beach and the sheltered front beach. Point Danger separates the two beaches. It is a tiny point of maybe 3 acres and it is lined by windswept trees. The photo was taken at 7:24 AM on 27 February 2018.

Lighting

What I was looking for was to create a silhouette with the wind swept trees and the rising sun provided the perfect albeit rather bright backlighting.

Equipment

Nikon D5300 with a Nikkor 18-140 f3.5-5.6 lens. ISO 350, F11, 1/500 sec. Handheld and no other equipment used.

Inspiration

Point Danger is the location of the ANZAC War Memorial. Up to 10,000 people attend a commemorative service there at dawn on 25 April each year in memory of the fallen ANZAC soldiers. I thought the rising sun backlighting the memorial site to be quite symbolic.

Editing

There was a quick edit done using Luminar 4.3. It took around 1-2 minutes to complete. There was a random click on the AI image enhancer (around 25%), followed by a reduction of the exposure to about -3.1 to fix what was initially a blown out image that I thought was a throw away. The sunrays were already present but I had to tweak them because reducing the exposure reduced their intensity. There are no layers, no cloning, no combining of images etc.

My kit now comprises D5300, Nikon 18-140, Nikon 35mm f1.8, Nikon 55-300, D7500, Nikon 200-500mm plus the obligatory tripod, monopod and remote shutter release.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to point your camera in the direction of the rising sun but do it in the minutes following sunrise and before the light strength intensifies to a point that you can't get anything useful. In this image, the sun is also largely blocked by the tree foliage which helped to reduce sun glare. I took a similar shot at another location only last week and was able to replicate the above lighting etc. I took the recent shot around 14 minutes after first light and got a much better exposure level.
