Location
Winki Pop (Winki) is the surf break next to Bells Beach (Bells) on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia. When it's on, Winki is a world class wave with rides lasting as long as 250 metres or more. The Rip Curl Pro was scheduled to run at Bells on Easter Saturday.Time
This shot was taken at 6:53 AM on Easter Saturday (16 April 2022) and is one of a series of 90 shots I took between 6:50 and 7:07 AM. With that for a sunrise it was hard to take my finger off the trigger.Lighting
There was a heavy fog just before first light and that created the lighting for a most spectacular sunrise. This shot was taken from halfway along the beach at Bells shooting back into the east.Equipment
This was taken on my fairly new Nikon D7500, 200-500 lens, tripod mounted, ISO 200, f11, 1/200 sec in shutter priority.Inspiration
Well, luckily the surfing comp at Bells was delayed until the afternoon because of the poor surf conditions so we had to find something else to shoot. Had the surfing been on, we would have been facing the south-west and might just have missed this sunrise altogether.Editing
Only very minor post-processing (sharpening) using Pure Raw 2 with nothing added or removed. There are no layers, no cloning, no combining of images etc.In my camera bag
My kit now comprises D5300, Nikon 18-140, Nikon 35mm f1.8, Nikon 55-300, D7500, Nikon 200-500mm plus the obligatory tripod, monopod and remote shutter release.Feedback
Be lucky enough to get out of bed early on the right day and be in the right place at the right time with the right gear and don't forget to look behind you because you might miss the shot of the day and not even know it.
