Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Melbourne Central Business District shot from Southbank with the iconic Princes Bridge and Yarra River as features.

Time

The shot was taken at about 8:30 PM on 22 June 2022 on an approximate 6 kilometre walk around the area plus the Shrine (War memorial) in the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Melbourne Arts Centre on St Kilda Road..

Lighting

The lighting level was sufficiently bright that I ended up using a variable ND filter with a 30 second exposure (to get the smooth river surface) at ISO 400 and f/18.

Equipment

Nikon D7500, 18-140 mm lens, tripod and variable ND filter.

Inspiration

The shot was taken on a night time visit to the location specifically to capture the river and reflected light images. I also wanted to try out the new filter. Fortunately, it all came together.

Editing

The photograph was processed once only in Luminar Neo. Nothing added or removed just the usual sharpening and adjustment of contrast etc.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7500, 18-140mm f3.5/5.6, 200-500 f/5.6, 35 mm f1.8 and a tripod and filters.

Feedback

It's all a bit of trial and error, but the ND filter made a serious difference because I was able to extend the exposure time out until I got the flat river surface.
